Home About the Department Introduction

The Department of Chemistry at HKU has a long tradition of excellence in teaching and research. We have a strong team of world class and renowned scientists who have strong commitment to providing quality teaching and are devoted to nurturing our new generation. The Department is ranked No. 1 among all chemistry departments in Hong Kong in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2014. The achievements of our staff have brought numerous international awards including the L’ORÉAL-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science (Asia-Pacific Laureate) and TWAS Prizes in Chemistry. Two teachers in our Department were elected as Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and also as Foreign Associates of National Academy of Sciences, USA.

The Department of Chemistry seeks to sustain and enhance its excellence as a first rate Chemistry Department both in the region and in the world through world-class research and teaching excellence. The mission of the Department is to provide excellence in teaching for our undergraduate and postgraduate students, to produce top quality research at the cutting edge of chemistry and to be a first class Chemistry Department in the world, to promote knowledge exchange through research excellence, and to provide professional services to the community in various areas of chemistry. Research in the Department encompasses a wide array of areas covering the traditional programmes of analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, and also the interdisciplinary studies such as materials science, chemical biology, sensors research, environmental science, drug discovery and computational chemistry.

We offer degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. For undergraduate level, the Chemistry curriculum includes core courses covering topics in physical, inorganic, organic, and analytical chemistry. We also provide a wide range of elective courses on current and emerging chemical science and technology areas, such as chemical biology, chemical analysis, computational chemistry, environmental chemistry, interfacial science, materials, and medicinal chemistry. In order to cater for students who follow the typical 96-credit curriculum and opt to broaden their education in other areas, as well as students who wish to specialize in chemistry, an intensive version of the Chemistry-Major programme (144 credits) which was accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is offered alongside of the regular 96-credit Chemistry-Major programme. Students who have successfully completed the RSC accredited chemistry programme will be awarded a certificate by the Department of Chemistry, with authorization by RSC, to recognise their achievements. All students in the final year of this accredited programme are qualified to apply for membership to RSC.

For postgraduate level, we offer Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes. The normative study period for full-time MPhil programme is 2 years while that for full-time PhD programme is 3 years (for those who already hold a research Master’s degree) or 4 years (for those with a good Bachelor’s degree with honours and/or a taught Master’s degree).

Our graduates are proficient in the principles and experimental skills of chemistry and are well-versed in the current development of chemical sciences. The transferable skills acquired through theoretical and experimental investigations in sciences can be easily applied to many aspects of life. They are ready to contribute to the industrial, commercial, government or education sectors globally and locally. Many of our past graduates have become leaders of these sectors.
